Rabbit chasers, recall training?!

Hubby come back from doggies walk this morning fuming, chasing Gizmo around with all their muddy paws.  Turns out Gizmo ignore him and just run off dangerously on the road, especially with him being a toy dog, he can easily been run over.  Though Gizmo has never been in any training class, he has been very well behave throughout.  Unlike Hanzo, he always turn his head and make sure I'm not too far from him before he continue walking and he is never too far from my sight normally.  Although as he is teaming up with Hanzo, who loves to chase rabbits, Gizmo discovered a taste for the chase too and whenever he saw one, he'll just run and run after them regardless of what is in his way. No calls or treats or scream will get him back.
Well, sadly he is now grounded..according to my husband who believes the stick rather than carrots.  I must look into recall training with him more often and must also bring his favourite toy with me during his walk as a distraction to the tasty rabbits that are lurking around everywhere.

Natural Raw diet?! Good apart from the bones!

I'm sure most of pet owner would only want the best for their pets, in particularly their diet because that no doubt affects so many areas in their lives. Being an owner of dogs going through slightly different life stages (Hanzo is just over 1 year old and Gizmo is 8 months old) and of different breed (Hanzo is a Japanese Akita Inu and Gizmo is a Shih Tzu cross Bichon Frise), I was searching for a diet that will be suitable for both. Like everyone else, I'm looking for quality, affordable and something I don't have to spend hours cooking in the kitchen.

After looking through various pet forums, I realised that the BARF diet is highly recommended and decided to read more about it. Going back to nature make sense, afterall that's what their great great ancestors ate and I like the in fact that there are no chemicals, additives etc added to this diet. It is fairly easy to prepare (as long as you've a big freezer!) and cost wise, it actually works out about the same I would have to pay with tin/dry food. Of course, being me, I was worry about them chewing bones and possibility of getting stuck or even sharp little bones cut their stomach lining etc..but then the amount of raw bones that I have to feed them is not a lot according to the instructions and I will only find out when I try it. Hey ho, my mind is made up and I placed my first order for a whole lot of meat, vegetable nuggets, meat chunks and chicken necks (hmm..yummy!)
These are the links of where I looked up about this diet, things I've ordered:
UK BARF CLUB
Chicken Mince
Beef Mince
Beef Chunks
Poultry Necks
Blended Fruit and Veg Nuggets

All come delivered frozen in box, this order will last for around a month for my 2 boys.  Since starting this diet at beginning of January, they've been doing very well.  I noticed they don't need to poo that often compare to before and best of all, it don't smell as bad either! It takes me the same time to prepare as I would have given them dry/tinned food.  The only down side..that is a big one is when Hanzo throw up with some sharp raw bone the other morning, my heart almost stopped! My worry came true..I've given him a raw turkey drumsticks (which is massive!) and he did take his time to chew it carefully.  He seems happy that night and went to bed as usual.  When I woke up in the morning, he was throwing up with bits of raw bones in his vomit.  I was so worry that it might hurt his stomach.  Luckily, he was fine for the rest of the day.  That really put me off and in fact that's the only reason I've stopped feeding them this diet.  There is another alternative available though, is to grind the bones very fine or to get the complete raw food online which has already prepare for that purpose so that they still get the minerals and nutrients from the bones.

I still recommend this diet highly but prehaps it might not be that suitable for certain breeds as Hanzo does have a sensitive tummy anyway.  Read it up and decide for yourself!

Dry, tinned or raw?! Decision, Decision..

Feeding for two constantly hungry dogs are not easy, especially they've recently been spoilted by my mum-in-law with fresh cooked pasta and yummy tuna. Since they got back from their Christmas indulgence, they've both turned their nose up their usual dry biscuits and as much as I tried to mixed most of it with wet tinned food (which they use to wuff down in seconds), their bowls remain untouched..so follow me to my bizarre search of the best diet for two very different kind of dogs.
